CELEBRATING WET’N’WILD HAWAI‘I GREEN ENERGY DAY

Wet’n’Wild is Hawai‘i’s first and only 100% solar-powered attraction

KAPOLEI, HAWAI‘I — On April 22nd, Earth Day, Hawai‘i’s first 100 percent solar-powered attraction celebrates “Wet’n’Wild Hawai‘i Green Energy Day.” Mayor Rick Blangiardi proclaimed April 22nd “Wet’n’Wild Hawai‘i Green Energy Day,” with a City & County of Honolulu proclamation delivered to the park’s General Manager Scott Loos and Marketing Director Eddie Galdones when the 1.3 MW solar system launched in 2021.

With 2,958 high-efficiency, 440-watt solar panels covering most of the carports in the parking lot, Wet’n’Wild guests have the added bonus of shady, covered parking, which has its own benefits of decreased CO2 emissions due to not needing to blast the AC to cool down cars after a day of fun in the sun. Annually, the system produces over 2,150,000 kWh (kilowatt hours)—equivalent to powering over 200 homes. In addition, the system annually eliminates the equivalent C02 emissions of:

  • 1,612,492 pounds of coal burned
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from driving 3,621,608 miles in a car
  • Carbon sequestered by 1,430 acres of U.S. forest

The solar system was installed by Sunspear Energy, a locally-owned leader in renewable energy construction, serving Hawai‘i since 2014. “With land being a scarce resource on O‘ahu, solar carports are a great solution for converting unused space into a revenue-generating asset while bringing us one step closer to Hawai‘i’s 100 percent renewable energy goal,” says Sunspear CEO Jeff Kaemmerlen. “Wet’n’Wild is setting the precedent for entertainment venues to use renewable energy to create more sustainable business models.”

To celebrate harnessing the power of the sun via 2.958 solar panels, a special $29.58 admission will be offered on Saturday, April 22nd and Sunday, April 23rd by simply saying “Earth Day” at the ticket window. The first 100 guests through the gate before 11:30 a.m. who say “Earth Day” will also get Free FLOWRIDER all day.

“With our partnership with Sunspear Energy we are working towards additional opportunities with the potential addition of onsite energy storage,” says Wet’n’Wild General Manager, Scott Loos. “We are excited and committed to constantly improving energy efficiency here at the park.”
